Pilgrimage

Our Lady of Mount Lussari

In 1360, a young shepherd from Camporosso found an image of the Mother of God on the summit of Mount Lussari. He immediately brought it down to the valley and handed it to the astonished parish priest.

The Pilgrims

According to tradition, the pilgrimage season lasts from the Feast of St John the Baptist (24 June) until the first Sunday of October. Centuries of historical records tell of annual pilgrimages organised from Carinthia, Gorenjska and Primorska.

Our Common Home

Our Lady of Mount Lussari welcomes beneath her mantle everyone who comes to her. When pilgrims enter the church, they arrive at their own home, where Mother Mary awaits them. Not only they, but everyone who comes here with the same intention, is at home.

The Shrine

A chapel and later a church were built where the image of the Mother of God was found. Despite political and linguistic divisions, Our Lady of Mount Lussari remains the Mother of all nations and the Queen of Europe.

Creation

At Mount Lussari the Julian Alps, the Carnic Alps and the Karawanks meet. Its waters flow towards both the Adriatic and the Black Sea. The valleys of the Drava, Sava, Soča and Fella all lead to this mountain.

History

The Canal Valley connects the Po Plain and the Italian Peninsula with Central and Northern Europe. Celts, Romans, Slavs, Germans and Italians have all left their mark here throughout history.
